The City of Fresno and XG Communities announce 100 site small cell 4.9G / 5G deployment

Smart city deployment is a commitment to address digital equity and wireless choice

FRESNO, Calif., July 27, 2018 – Today, XG Communities, LLC announced the first of over 100 new 4.9G/5G small cell sites utilizing city-owned infrastructure in the City of Fresno. The network, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018, will cover over half of the City with the latest wireless technology. This places Fresno as a clear market leader among the first cities nationwide to commence the roll-out of advanced small cell networks.

Together, Fresno and XG Communities have laid the groundwork for efficient, city-wide scaled deployment of next generation wireless utilizing the vertical infrastructure, fiber and conduit. The new network is foundational for technology companies and smart city initiatives which have been frustrated by the lack of progress made by national wireless carriers developing advanced small cell networks.

The network is being developed by Small Cell Partners, a Manhattan Beach, California based investment group. Although Small Cell Partners has not shared network details, it anticipates announcing 12 more XG Communities’ cities where it will be implementing similar next generation networks that will service both new entrant wireless providers and traditional national wireless carriers.

The network will boast 100 megabit to gigabit speeds to be optimized to support emerging smart city and IoT technologies as well as over-the-top streaming videos. Small Cell Partners also anticipates early trials of 3.5 GHz CBRS technologies.

John Clarey, CEO of XG Communities stated, “The agreement with Small Cell Partners is indicative of the beginning of a new chapter in communications utilizing next generation disruptive technologies which will change the landscape of wireless broadband delivery to consumers and businesses. You will see new names in the industry providing these new advanced technologies similar to the explosion of telecommunications after the breakup of the Bell monopolies.”

He went on to state, “The next generation small cell networks will be far superior to the existing wireless networks offering higher speeds, lower latency, lower costs and better coverage.”

Outdoor small cell wireless deployments have been restricted by cities and wireless carriers treating the implementations like macro tower developments. Through the work of XG Communities, in collaboration with over 30 cities nationwide, a new paradigm has been created that allows city-owned infrastructure of poles, fiber and conduit to be organized and developed by wireless providers utilizing XG’s Site SeleX database and reservation system. Site SeleX boasts over 300,000 assets ready for small cell deployment.

The residents and businesses in Fresno will benefit from this new network.

The City of Portland is anxious to bring additional cellular coverage to their citizens – RFP awarded to XG Communities

PortlandPORTLAND, Ore., April 2, 2018 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — XG Communities, a premier provider of wireless marketing plans and engineering services for cities and municipalities across the United States, has been awarded an exclusive wireless marketing agreement with the City of Portland.

After an extensive process, the City of Portland has partnered with XG Communities to enhance coverage and capacity in alignment with the City’s goal of greater connectivity. The decision to partner with XG Communities was made based on the company’s ability to retain local control, preserve aesthetic integrity and increase connectivity for businesses and residents. Additionally, addressing wireless inequality in the City of Portland is necessary to drive economic development.

As wireless networks transition from 4G to 5G technology, wireless carriers will look to deploy hundreds of thousands of small cells nationwide. This exponential increase in the volume wireless facility applications will strain city resources. In collaboration with carriers, XG Communities will organize and streamline the application and deployment processes in order to serve the city and carriers.

“We are thrilled to partner with the City of Portland on this important initiative. Now more than ever, wireless infrastructure will be the underpinning of economic development and citizen satisfaction,” said Monnie McGaffigan, President of XG Communities. “Connectivity is the backbone of a productive economy and a connected community. We are honored to assist Portland in this endeavor.”

 About The City of Portland:

Neighborhood-oriented since its founding, Portland grew outward to become the vibrant and charming major city it is today. The birthplace for car sharing, Portland is already a favorite amongst millennials; the city is not only surrounded by lush Oregon landscapes and a cycling community, but it is a hub for startups, collaboration and green practices, with coffee and farm to table cuisine surrounded by the largest collection of microbreweries in the country.

First small cells come to life in Sacramento.

Sacramento - XGIRVINE, Calif., March, 26, 2018 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — XG Communities LLC and the City of Sacramento announced that multiple carriers have received permit approvals to build small cells in downtown Sacramento. Mobilitie began construction immediately and already has sites on air. Sacramento’s model invites carriers and connectivity providers to enhance wireless coverage and capacity for the citizens of Sacramento by leveraging city-owned assets.

Sacramento has updated its policies and processes to allow for small cells to quickly obtain city approval. Sacramento’s goal to be the nation’s first 5G city is close to realization.

“We’re honored to be a proving ground and of interest to so many technology and connectivity providers,” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said. “We believe that our strategy to improve connectivity and competition for our residents is working.”

Carriers built test sites in 2017 and intend to construct hundreds of small cells over the coming months. The sites are aesthetically pleasing and are in line with the city’s technology priorities.

“We’re disrupting how small cells are deployed – making the process faster, streamlined, and predictable,” said XG Communities founder and CEO John Clarey. “We think our model working with cities is the future and we’ve proven that it works here in California.”

XG Communities Threatens the Current Outdated Small Cell Deployment Model

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 11, 2018 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — XG Communities LLC, a premier provider of accelerated, organized and predictable wireless deployment for cities and municipalities across the United States, announced initial success in solving the small cell inventory and speed-to-deployment problems facing connectivity providers. Contrary to macro tower ownership models, XG Communities serves as the facilitator in the process for both cities and carriers, reducing variability and increasing the speed.

XG Communities has developed the first of its kind digital portal to enable carriers to reserve city-owned assets for small cell deployment, in only a few steps.

XG Communities’ approach removes the lengthy back and forth process for legal negotiations and provides predictability for cities. So far, XG Communities has launched 6 cities on the Site SeleX Platform, including four cities in California (Sacramento, Fresno, Clovis and San Luis Obispo) and St. Louis, Missouri.

A CEO of a major tower company recently highlighted the challenge of deploying small cells – citing a backlog of 25,000 small cell orders with an average deployment time of 18 to 24 months. Given this timeline, connectivity providers will not be able to meet density required for the deployment of 5G and other emerging technologies. XG Communities’ goal is to decrease the deployment timeline 6 months process. XG Communities is unique in its approach with cities, which involves close collaboration with cities to strengthen the city’s expertise and revise processes to align with the new technical requirements of small cell deployment. The common goal between carriers and cities is to meet the tremendous small cell demand over the next five years and increase our nation’s connectivity.

John Clarey, the CEO and Founder of XG Communities, said “The only way to break this logjam is the use of a facilitator steeped in expertise that sits between cities and carriers to make the process predictable and repeatable.”

He added that the market is uniquely ripe for disruption and there is a clear path forward to ensure that XG Communities cities are ready for 5G and other emerging technologies, such as CBRS or 3.5GHz.

SEEING A 5G FUTURE, FRESNO MARKETS 35,000 SITES FOR CELLULAR TRANSMITTERS

Published On November 13, 2017 – 10:18 AM
Written By David Castellon

The nation’s cellular providers are backing away from building massive cell towers and instead are opting to pepper communities with mini cell transmitters to boost local cell service.
The city of Fresno has about 35,000 sites where those transmitters can go, most of them atop light poles, utility towers and utility boxes, said Mark Standriff, a spokesman for the city.
“Carriers, connectivity and technology companies may reserve sites through an online portal,” states a press release from the city.
In May Fresno entered into an agreement with 5 Bars XG Communities, an Irvine-based wireless infrastructure company that serves as a go-between on behalf of municipalities and counties to broker deals with the nation’s four major wireless companies — Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile — and other businesses when they want to construct or deploy upgraded infrastructure for wireless communication.
The contract also involves 5 Bars marketing the city as a place to receive this new technology to fill the gaps in its wireless coverage and boost local download speeds, leading to last week’s announcement on the availability of sites to install mini transmitters.
The mini transmitters also are expected to help the wireless industry speed up its service in the future by deploying 5G-speed Internet over the current 4G speed.
5 Bars is launching a proprietary site selection and reservation platform to enable the reservation of hundreds of these sites at one time.
“This effort puts the city of Fresno on the cutting edge with the first-ever deployment in California of a system that will help them prepare for 5G and emerging technologies, IoT [Internet of Things] and autonomous vehicles,” states a press release from the city.
“To meet this exponential demand, carriers, connectivity providers and technology companies will need to invest aggressively in small cells over the next couple of years,” it continues.
“The City of Fresno has already received significant interest from major carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, as well as technology companies, such as Facebook and Google.”

City Announces New Wireless Marketing Plan, Small Cell Program with 5 Bars Communities

City of Sacramento deploys its first Small Cell site

SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 28, 2017 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Working with 5 BARS, a leading innovator in Small Cell, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and Wi-Fi wireless services for intelligent infrastructure, the City of Sacramento has approved its first small cell test sites with two major wireless carriers.

Sacramento has been inundated with permit applications for small cell wireless facilities in the right of way. In a race to densify existing networks, wireless providers often submit multiple applications, in some cases over 40 applications simultaneously. As Sacramento struggled to work with carriers on better designs and locations for each submission, the City reached out to 5 Bars to act as a liaison between the carriers and the city’s planning department.

After an extensive RFP process, the City of Sacramento selected 5 Bars to develop a Wireless Master Plan on behalf of the City of Sacramento. 5 Bars is successfully working with all 4 major carriers to minimize visual blight and accelerate cellular coverage for the citizens of Sacramento.

“This initial small cell site is the direct result from a collaborative effort between 5 Bars, the City of Sacramento and the carriers. We worked in collaboration on an approval process and an aesthetically pleasing solution that works for everyone,” said Darin Arcolino, IT Director with the City of Sacramento.

As the California Legislature works to pass SB 649, a Bill that would preempt local authority on small cell siting by eliminating local zoning and aesthetic requirements, the City of Sacramento and 5 Bars proactively worked with the carriers to incentivize the deployment of wireless facility designs, where antennas and radios compliment existing structures.

“We have been working diligently with the City of Sacramento and the carriers to ensure the citizens receive the benefits of great coverage, and the carriers get what they need. Orchestrating a solution that all parties can agree to in a timely manner is a win-win for all,” said Monnie McGaffigan, President 5 Bars.

As a result, the City of Sacramento has issued and built its first test site. Additionally, hundreds of applications are in process for smalls cells throughout the city. 5 Bars continues to work with the City of Sacramento towards its connected city goals.

Lathrop Wants to Streamline Right-of-Way Zoning by Planning Ahead

The City of Lathrop is taking preemptive measures before carriers can start laying claims to their public city right-of- way, according to the Manteca Bulletin.

The City Council last week adopted an ordinance that will incorporate a master plan for telecom development authored by 5 Bars, LLC, an independent wireless consulting firm. The plan will help “streamline the city’s future when it comes to the location, placement, and possible revenue-generating aspects of the placement of wireless communication equipment on city towers and in city rights-of-way,” said the Manteca Bulletin. The development of the wireless master plan will cost the city nothing however 5 Bars would receive 35 percent of all proceeds that come from future placement or development of wireless tower sites.

Vice Mayor Steve Dresser questioned the agreement and why the city would give up a third of the revenue if carriers contacted the city directly. However, the city attorney reminded Dresser that contractually they are obligated

to refer all inquiries to 5 Bar. The ordinance is up for final approval at a future meeting.
